A horse race is a sporting event in which horses compete against each other for a prize. While some people criticize the sport, claiming it to be inhumane and corrupted due to doping and overbreeding, others see it as the pinnacle of achievement for the competitors. The sport subsequently spread to China and Persia where it was adapted and developed into the discipline we know today. The horses represent each of the seventeen Contrade, or wards of the city, and a magnificent pageant is held prior to the actual race.
